Conquest was the main tool of these Hellenistic kings and a focal point

Conquest was the main tool of these Hellenistic kings and a focal point for more power. A Hellenistic king without lands tends to not look as powerful when compared to other kings with a plethora of land, this was a big reason for conquest. In the life of Pyrrhus, he was consistently trying to build an empire. He sought to build an empire of his own when he went to southern Italy to help Tarentum which called for help. His main focus in doing this was in hopes of building his own empire. If he would have been able to defeat the Romans he would have accomplished this goal. Unfortunately for Pyrrhus the endless supply of Roman troops would see this dream defeated. Then again he got another chance to build a small empire in Sicily when the Greek city states there want help with the Carthaginians. But he would ultimately fail in doing so. This shows how Hellenistic kings were contently trying to build empires and in order to consolidate power. Conquest was a major tool in building power, and Pyrrhus used this tool more than enough times to try and build his own empire. Many other Hellenistic kings used conquest as a means to expand their land, and therefore their power, they did this because it was effective in gaining more territory. Plutarch, Life of Pyrrhus
