Epic Hero � Based on the pictures on the following slides, what is an epic hero? � � � An important figure from a history or legend Usually favored by or even partially descended from deities Participates in a cyclical journey or quest (Hero’s Journey) • Faces adversaries • Gathers allies along his journey • Returns home significantly transformed by his journey. � Illustrates traits, performs deeds, and exemplifies certain morals that are valued by the society from which the epic originates.

Tragic Heroes � “A man cannot become a hero until he can see the root of his own downfall. ” -Aristotle � What � The does this quote mean? tragic hero is a man of noble stature. He is not an ordinary man, but a man with outstanding quality and greatness about him. His own destruction is for a greater cause or principle.

Traits of a Tragic Hero �Noble birth • Typically a king or member of the royal family • Someone that normal people would “look up to” or admire – has outstanding qualities �Possesses a tragic flaw • Also called the Hamartia • Traditional fatal flaw is hubris, or excessive pride • Flaw ultimately leads to hero’s downfall, often death
