K to 12 for all (The Philippine Star) | Updated May 17, 2013 - 12: 00 am For millions of Filipinos, kindergarten and other preparatory courses before first grade used to give children with financial means an early edge in academic achievements over their underprivileged peers. With the enactment of Republic Act 10533, kindergarten is now free for all Filipinos and required for entry to first grade… Under RA 10533, students will be prepared to pursue either vocational courses, which offer quick employment opportunities, or regular college courses. Editorial: Teachers seek something more substantial than praise, commendation-October 8, 2015 World Teachers’ Day

Editorial: Teachers seek something more substantial than praise, commendation-October 8, 2015 World Teachers’ Day was celebrated this week, with the national government paying them the usual tribute for their role in strengthening communities and building the nation… The teachers themselves, however, said that while praises are good, “mas kailangan ng ating mga guro ang tunay na pagpapahalaga…. ” The government can show real appreciation for teachers by heeding their call for better pay, said National Chairman Benjo Basas of the Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC). On Monday, the TDC met with some officials of the Department of Budget and Managemednt (DBM) on proposed salary increases for 2016, then marched to Mendiola where they expressed dismay over the administration’s lack of any initiative to legislate salary increases and other benefits for teachers since it assumed office in 2010.

Still no action on Metro gridlock August 29, 2015 The biggest gridlock along Epifanio

Still no action on Metro gridlock August 29, 2015 The biggest gridlock along Epifanio De los Santos Ave. (EDSA) appears to be at the Cubao area in Quezon City where traffic converges from five directions, like the spokes of a wheel meeting at the hub – from Marikina and Rizal towns in the east along Aurora Blvd. , from Makati in the southeast on EDSA, from Manila on Aurora Blvd. , also from Manila on Rodriguez Ave. , and from Caloocan in the northwest on EDSA. There seems to be no plan at all to solve this problem… Metro traffic, like flood control, is the responsibility of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), as it cannot be solved by individual mayors working alone. Manila Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada tried to solve the traffic jams caused by cargo trucks exiting the Manila Port Area, but this led to a bigger problem that affected the national economy as factories failed to get their imported raw materials…

Jesse Robredo: Local Hero By: Inter. Aksyon. com August 21, 2012 1: 44 PM

Jesse Robredo: Local Hero By: Inter. Aksyon. com August 21, 2012 1: 44 PM He is known globally and now celebrated nationally, but in the end, Jesse Robredo was a hero and symbol for the power and promise of 'local'. From 1988, when he first became mayor of Naga City, until his untimely passing this week, Robredo represented and - by his example - led, a rising generation of mayors, governors, and yes, barangay captains, who live and give evidence to the wisdom of the Local Government Code. Ever a pioneer, Robredo actually made his mark as mayor before the Code was enacted in 1991. But his memory will ever be tied to that landmark law, a bold Bicolano to a bold piece of legislation – each rising on the impudence that local communities, if they are, and are to be, true communities, do not need Manila and the national government for their own dreams, dynamism, and determination. They can be better…
