What is meant by civil and criminal law? • Civil law concerns disputes between private individuals and groups • Criminal law is relevant when the state law has been broken. • Cases involve the police gathering evidence and then forwarding it to the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service)
Types of crime • Some offences fall into category of crime against the person. The crime is directed against an individual or a group of people. This crime includes murder, assault and rape. It also includes slander, hate crime and neglect of children and mugging

Crimes against property • The majority of offences are crimes against property. Crimes of dishonesty, such as burglary, vehicle theft, shoplifting, film and music piracy, account for nearly half the total number of offences.
Religious offences • Religious offences may or may not be classified as crimes. • Religions have their own sets of laws and rules and breaking them would be seen by the members of faith as an offence or sin
