Types of Activities
There are three types of activities: Absorb-type activities. Do-type activities. Connect-type activities.
Absorb-type Activities These are the ones closest to pure information. Absorb activities usually consist of information and the actions learners take to extract and comprehend knowledge from that information. Common types of absorb activities: Presentation, Storytelling, Reading, Field trips.
Absorb-type Activities: Presentations • supply needed information in a clear, wellorganized, logical sequence • convey information and demonstrate procedures and behavior in a straightforward flow of experience. Types of presentations: Slide shows, Physical demonstrations, Software demonstrations, Informational films, Dramas, Discussions, Podcasts.
Absorb-type Activities: Presentations Use presentations to: • convey basic information • demonstrate (show) well-defined procedures • model human behaviors. • control the sequence of learning experiences.
Absorb-type Activities: Storytelling activities relate individual human experiences. They make information real and personal and relate what you are to a human being.
Absorb-type Activities: Storytelling Share story to: • Demonstrate the applicability or importance of what is being taught. • Give concrete instances of the subject matter. • Humanize a subject by showing its effects on people the learner cares about. • motivate learners to overcome difficulties.
Absorb-type Activities: Storytelling There are two types of story-telling activities: 1. story told by the instructor or designer (absorb activity). 2. story told by the learner (connect activity): creates a connect activity. The story adds the element of reflection and encourages learners to think about what has been said and how it applies to their own situation.
Absorb-type Activities: Reading Use reading activities when: • learners need deeper knowledge on a subject. • You don’t have time to develop more interactive materials and well-written documents are readily available. • learners are skillful reader and motivated enough to read on their own.
Absorb-type Activities: Reading activities for e-learning typically provide access to readings in three ways: Individual documents, libraries of documents to select from, and predefined search to find internet resources.
Absorb-type Activities: Field Trips Online field trips take learners out of the virtual classroom and on an educational expedition to places where they can observe concrete examples of what they are learning. For example, an art student can visit a virtual museum to see paintings.
Absorb-type Activities: Field Trips Types of field trips: • Guided tours: Guided tours orients the learner in a virtual or real environment, it can be used to lead learners through an online representation of a real environment. It can also be used to introduce an interactive computer system, such as: computer application, web site, e-learning course
Absorb-type Activities: Field Trips Types of field trips: • Virtual Museums: contains an organized collection of exhibits of informative objects in an online space. A virtual museum is like a guided tour except that the learner decides how to navigate the museum.
Absorb-type Activities: Field Trips Why use field trips? Use it to: • Show concepts taught in the course are applied in the real world. • Provide access to many concrete examples. • Orient learners in a new environment or system.
