Types and Components of Computer System

Software • It’s a general term for the programs that is controlling the computer. There are two different kind of software: systems software and application software

• It is the program that allows the hardware properly. • It is the program that allows the user to do specific tasks.

1. 2 Components of computer systems • Secondary Storage Devices

CPU A. K. A Microprocessor

Advantages of the memories • Fast data transfer/ access times • Large capacity to store data

Random Access Memory (RAM) • It’s an internal chip where data is stored when programs are running. This memory can be written and read.

It’s a memory chip used to: • Store information that needs to be permanent. • Contain • It can’t be altered, but it can be read. Advantage • The memory would not be lost if computer is turned off.

Types of Computers PC/Desktop Computers • PC (Personal Computer) refers to the computer systems which are IBM Compatible.

Disadvantages • Low costs • Desktops have a better specification for a given price. • The large casing allows good recreation of any heat built up.

Laptop Computers Laptop (or notebook) refers to a type of computer that have the desktop’s components all together as a single unit an it makes it portable. Features of a Laptop • Low Weight • Low battery consumption • A processor that doesn’t generate too much heat.

Disadvantages • They are portable because the desktop components are made altogether as a single unit. • They can take full advantage of WIFI. • They can link into any multimedia system.

Netbooks • It’s a smaller version of a Laptop. It has the similar advantages of a laptop. • Its disadvantages of a netbook is that they have smaller keyboards that may be problems for people with big hands.

• It’s a type of computer that is smaller than all of the other computer. • There’s no keyboard, but there is a keyboard that appears on the screen. It’s touch screen.

Disadvantages • They can be used anywhere according to their size. • They are lighter than laptops and are more portable because they are smaller.

Mainframe Computers • It’s a large and very powerful, computer system. • They can have several CPUs. • They have very fast processor speeds. • They have a huge amounts of storage capacity. • They have huge internal memories. • They often operate using time sharing and batch processing.

Disadvantages • They can be used to do a large jobs which require large memories and very fast processor time.
