The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to rise from the bottomless pit[a] and go to destruction. And the dwellers on earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world will marvel to see the beast, because it was and is not and is to come. Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. The demons kept begging Jesus not to send them into the bottomless pit. Luke 8: 31 NLT
