Two Kinds Introducing the Story The mother in “Two Kinds” is a Chinese immigrant who sees promise in all that America has to offer. She pushes her daughter Jing-mei to become a prodigy. What will happen when Jing-mei pushes back? What events helped shape the character of Jing-mei’s mother? What does Jing-mei show about her character when she starts to reject some of her mother’s ideas?

Character Motivation= the reason a character acts or does something • “The reason we do what • Two types of character we do. ” motivation: – intrinsic & extrinsic
Intrinsic- means you are motivated to do something internally – Something inside you drives you to do something – EX: wanting to do a good job – -EX: wanting to do the right thing – EX: wanting to be a better person
Extrinsic- means you are motivated to do something by an outside force – In other words, things are given to you that drive you to do something -EX: chocolate makes you do something -EX: kool aid, candy, free time, money, jail
