Philip Almond BBC Director of Marketing • They give a channel personality. It comes from the pace of an evening and how you create an evening. You need a guy to come on between programmes. If there were no trailers, no idents, it would be an incredibly jolting experience, so you need that space, But also you’re in people’s living rooms and you’re there by permission. • You better be nice or they’ll kick you out. • Like the glue that holds the channel together- a cohesive force.
So what is it for Really- Some history • BBC started 1938, closed 1939 during WW 2 and reopened again in 1946 • There was no competition until 1953 when commercial TV started so an ident was needed to brand the product.
