THE BEGINNING OF A TRADITION THE BOILERMAKER The year was 1891. A college known for its proud heritage of educating the sons and daughters of the working class began to dominate opponents in football. After a 44 -0 thrashing of Wabash College, a headline writer provided inspiration for a most unique nickname. “Wabash Snowed Completely Under by the Burly Boiler Makers from Purdue” chronicled a victory by the “Herculean wearers of the black and old gold. ” Never intended as a compliment, the insult appealed to students of the day. The indomitable spirit of the boilermaker is embodied in the tireless laborer you see before you. 3 INCOSE GLRC, 10 October 2014

WHY CAN’T WE SOLVE THESE PROBLEMS? No Systems of Equations No Imposed Control Evolutionary Observed Data Unprecedented Scale Structure Not Predefined Across Levels Not Intentionally Designed Across Domains Interactions Across Scales Adaptive 10 INCOSE GLRC, 10 October 2014
WHY PURDUE FOR THESE PROBLEMS? Purdue’s Mission: “is to serve the citizens of Indiana, the United States, and the world…”. Engineering, Sciences, and Liberal Arts are about understanding and solving society’s problems, as well as making dreams a reality – serving society Purdue’ strengths in Engineering, Sciences, Business, and Social Sciences provides a unique collaborative opportunity - with an ‘application culture” 11 INCOSE GLRC, 10 October 2014
RESEARCH POTENTIAL Designing around Equilibria Bringing in the Human Dimension 12 INCOSE GLRC, 10 October 2014 Discovering Universal Principles
PURDUE’S RESEARCH FOCUS UNDERSTANDING INTERACTIONS, INFORMATION, AND INCENTIVES FOR DESIGNING SYSTEMS Incentive s • Nonmonetary social and political incentives and constraints • Multiple stakeholders with power and resources Information • Uncertain and rapidly changing environments • Overwhelming amounts of data Interactions • Multiple stakeholders and actors interacting explicitly and implicitly • Unpredictable emergent behavior 13 INCOSE GLRC, 10 October 2014
HOW DOES RESEARCH SUPPORT DESIGN? Design Consideration State of the Art and Practice Research Focus Performance Measured from perspective of a single decision maker’s objectives Methods to accommodate multiple stakeholders’ value systems during design and operations Cost Financial accounting of costs to meet budgets constraints and investors’ financial goals Means to account for nonmonetary resources consumed, ethical constraints, and stakeholders’ goals Schedule Meeting a date certain to deliver results Planning for multiple, flexible delivery approaches and evolutionary designs Risk Controlling and eliminating uncertainty Planning for adaptive decisions in response to an uncertain and changing environment 14 INCOSE GLRC, 10 October 2014
TRANSFORMATIVE IMPACT SCIENCE TO EXPLAIN, METHODS FOR PRACTICE, AND EDUCATION AT MULTIPLE LEVELS Educational Enterprise • Researchers • Policy makers and engineers • Public Research Enterprise • Theoretical foundations that span science, engineering, math, and human & social sciences • Methods for practice grounded in science 15 INCOSE GLRC, 10 October 2014
