DBQ Rules • Outline the essay question before you read the documents • Sort the documents into categories, do not list them in order • Normal essay rules still apply, come up with a good thesis statement • Half your information should come from the documents, half of it should come from outside information (your brain), #1 piece of advice • Cite the documents, as in Doc. B said, “Women gained greater independence. ” Underline the citation. • Use all the documents if you can, or at least all but one. • Make sure you add history to every document by commenting on the source or putting the document into historical context • Never start a paragraph with the topic sentence Document B said, rather start with an idea like “women gained the right to vote during the time period.
