Literature is defined by the people that create it and the rich experiences that have shaped their lives. In early American literature, there are two distinct voices: the Native Americans, who occupied the land first, and the Puritans, who sought refuge on its shores. American literature of the 1600 s included mythical tales, governing documents, poetry, sermons, historical accounts, and autobiographical material. Several themes emerge from the texts of this time period including the Native American sense of community and respect for the natural world, the Puritan’s religious devotion and perseverance in the face of challenge, and from both cultures, an admiration for self-reliance.
§ Use the order you have established in your thesis statement. For example, my thesis mentions the Native Americans, then the Puritans, and finally, a comparison of the two. Themes in Native American Literature: § Respect for the natural world In the invocation of The Iroquois Constitution, the confederate lords offer thanks to “the earth where men dwell, to the streams of water, the pools, the springs and the lakes, to the maize and the fruits, to the medicinal herbs and trees, to the forest trees for their usefulness, to the animals that serve as food, and give their pelts for clothing. . . ” (43). § The value of community “In all of your deliberations in the confederate council, in your efforts at making laws, in all your official acts, self-interest shall be cast into oblivion” (The Iroquois Constitution, 44).

Themes in Puritan Literature: § Wilderness William Bradford wrote, “But that which is most sad and lamentable was that in two or three months’ time, half of their company died, especially in January and February, being the depth of winter, and wanting houses and other comforts; being infected with the scurvy and other diseases. . . (61). § Individualism, Optimism Revise thesis here! I can’t find a good quote to support this claim. § Christian faith In “Huswifery” by Edward Taylor, he prays, “Make me, O Lord, thy spinning wheel complete. . . And make my soul thy holy spoole to be” (81).
IV. A comparison of the two – what common ground they shared. Themes in both: § Self-reliance “We place at the top of the Tree of the Long Leaves an eagle who is able to see afar. If he sees in the distance any evil approaching or any danger threatening, he will at once warn the people of the confederacy” (The Iroquois Constitution, 43). “Being thus past the vast ocean, and a sea of troubles before in their preparation. . . They had now no friends to welcome them nor inns to entertain or refresh their weather-beaten bodies, no houses or much less towns to repair to, to seek for succor” (Bradford, 60).
