Tuesday 21 th April 2020 Charlotte’s Web Chapter 1 WALT: broaden our vocabulary WILF: I can identify which words I do not understand. I can use a dictionary to find the meaning of a word. I can write my own explanation of a word. I can write a sentence using this word. I can use comma sandwich sentences using the new words.
Starter Prefixes: Prefixes are letters which we add to the beginning of a word to make a new word with a different meaning. E. g. un + kind = unkind There are many prefixes. Today we will focus only on 3 of them. prefix sub‘sub-’ means under prefix inter- ‘inter-’ means between, or among prefix super‘super-’ means above

Main lesson Read Chapter 1 Discuss any words that I am not sure of. What can I do to find out the meaning of words that I am not familiar with?
List of some interesting words from Chapter 1 Axe ~ Runt ~ Pitcher ~ Litter ~ Untimely ~ Abattoir ~ Guess the meaning of each word. Then check its real meaning using a dictionary or an online dictionary.
Discussion Task- answers to be recorded in books. 1. What genre is Charlotte’s web? 2. How do you know? 3. What do you expect from this genre? 4. Write 3 -5 questions you would to ask about the story so far.
Reading Task Read Chapter 1: Why was Fern so upset about the axe? Which characters do we meet in Chapter 1? What did Avery have when he came into the room? How did Fern feel when her classmates laughed at her? How do you know?
Writing Task Scan through Chapter 1 – can you find any unusual words? Write a column list, leaving space for the meaning. Use a dictionary to find out the meanings of the words. Axe ~ Runt ~ Pitcher ~ Litter ~ Untimely ~ Abattoir ~ Ex. Write these words in a new sentence.
Debate You will be Mr Arable and then Fern. If you are Mr Arable Why would you say that the piglet should be killed? If you are Fern Why would you say the piglet should not be killed?
