Tues 913 SWBAT simplify algebraic expressions Agenda 1

Tues, 9/13 SWBAT… simplify algebraic expressions Agenda 1. Warm-up (10 min) 2. Review hw#1 (15 min) 3. Combining like terms / practice (15 min) 4. OYO (On Your Own) practice problems (5 min) Warm-Up: HW#2: Simplifying algebraic expressions

Algebraic Expressions Objective: To combine like terms to simplify expressions Infinity HS Ms. Sophia Papaefthimiou

Like Terms are terms with the same variable AND the same exponent. To simplify expressions with like terms, simply combine the like terms. Example #1: Simplify: 5 x – 4 x 2 – 7 x + 14 x 2 Answer: 10 x 2 – 2 x

Are these like terms? 1) 13 k, 22 k Yes, the variables are the same. 2) 5 ab, 4 ba Yes, the order of the variables doesn’t matter. (Commandment #9) 3) x 3 y, xy 3 No, the exponents are on different variables.

WARNING!!!! n You calculate the answer using the sign that is to the left of the number or variable.

Warm-Up: Simplify each expression 1) 5 a 2 + 7 a Simplified 2) -4 x 2 y + x 2 y – x 2 y + x 2 -4 x 2 y + x 2 3) 3 m 2 n + 10 mn 2 – 7 m 2 n – 4 mn 2 + 9 m -4 m 2 n + 6 mn 2 + 9 m 4) a + 3 a – 4(9 – a) 8 a – 36 5) If a triangle has sides 3 x – 2, 5 – x and 2 x – 5, what is the perimeter of the triangle? 4 x – 2

1. ) Which of the following is the simplified form of -4 x + 7 x ? 1. 2. 3. 4. -4 3 x -3 x 4 Don’t forget the negative!

2. ) Which of the following is the simplified form of 5 x – 4 – 7 x + 14 ? 1. 2. 3. 4. 12 x + 18 -2 x + 10 2 x – 18 12 x – 18

3. ) -4 d – 6 a 2 +2 d – 12 a 2 -18 a 2 – 2 d 4. ) 5. ) y

OYO (On Your Own) Problems 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 5(z – 3) + 4 z 4(y 2 + 8 y – 2) – y 2 + y 5(3 x – 7) – 6 x 7(4 x 2 + 3 x) + 2(5 x 2 + x) 8 x + 2[5 – (x – 3)] Step 1: Distribute the -1 first (inside the brackets) Step 2: Combine the like terms inside the brackets Step 3: Distribute the 2
