The Road To Rank Advancement Leadership Swimming Hiking Eagle Scout Citizenship 30 – 60 Months First Aid Camping Life Scout Knots 18 – 36 Months Scout Laws Star Scout 12 – 24 Months First Class Scout Oath 6 – 12 Months Second Class 3 – 6 Months Tenderfoot 2 – 4 Months Scout 1 - 4 Months Merit Badges (over 120 to choose from)

Advancement Process – Advancement Chair: Ana Inman (425)-829 -4675 – Approx. 10 -15 requirements per Rank – Requirements signed off in Scout handbook by Troop member who is at least two ranks above – After completing requirements: • Peer Review – Scout schedules with Senior Patrol Leader to review skills • Scoutmaster Conference – Scout schedules with John Kern (425)-444 -1785 • Board of Review – Scout schedules with Morris Buel (425)-270 -8416 – Court of Honor (typically in October and June)

Merit Badges – Basket Weaving to Nuclear Engineering – The Scout indicates his interest to Scoutmaster, who gives him: • A signed Application for Merit Badge (the “blue card”) • The name and phone number of the council/district-approved counselor – The Scout calls the merit badge counselor and makes an appointment – The merit badge counselor sets the date and time for the Scout and his buddy (the Scout is counseled with a buddy present) – Scout responsible for merit badge pamphlet & application – At the first interview, the merit badge counselor and the Scout decide upon projects, goals, and a schedule – The Scout is always tested individually but with a buddy present – The Scout returns the completed application card to the Scoutmaster

Meetings & Activities • Meet most Mondays 7 -8: 30 at OSLC (if no school, then no meeting) – First meeting of each month is both Committee (parents) and scouts meeting – Last Thursday of the month is typically a PLC meeting – Meet September through June (considering Summer mtgs) • Typically 1 outdoor/camping activity a month • Summer – Summer Camp Jul 30 - Aug 5, 2015 (Sun – Sat) • • Camp Fire Mountain in Mt Vernon, WA Estimated cost is $325, due in early May Adult participation encouraged for full or partial week Best way to advance in scout ranks……and a ton of fun!! – High Adventure (for older Scouts) • Philmont (New Mexico). Past events include Seabase (Florida) , Yellowstone

Typical Troop Meeting Agenda • • Setup Opening Ceremony Skills Instruction Patrol Meetings Inter-Patrol Activity Closing Cleanup

Fees & Fund Raising • Annual Re-charter – Approx. $36 per Scout in December. Includes Boys Life Magazine (only $1 transfer fee for incoming Webelos) • Annual Dues – $25 per Scout in March (for troop expenses, gear, etc) • Outings – Fees depend on event and location • Scout Account • Friends of Scouting (Council) – Meeting our goals means badges are paid for • Troop Fund Raising – Christmas Tree Pickup, Popcorn Sales, Pie Sales

Adult Participation • Troop Committee member – – Ask that at least one adult from each family be registered Attend monthly parent meetings Participate in rank advancement Board of Review Participate in Outings • Outing Adults – Each outing is assigned an outing Scout and Adult – Assist Scout with planning and communication • Merit Badge Counselors • Training Opportunities – Web based training • http: //myscouting. org – Youth Protection required to register – Roundtable (monthly District Leadership Meeting)

What’s next? • What does my Scout need – Boy Scout Handbook (provided by the troop) – Uniform • Class A (Field Uniform) Full Uniform: Khaki Shirt, Neckerchief and Slide, Belt, Pants & socks (preferred), Hat (optional) • Class B (Activity Uniform) Casual Uniform: Troop 676 T-Shirt • Uniform bank is an option to help get started – Camping/Hiking Gear • Personal gear (backpack, sleeping bag, clothes, utensils, “ 10 essentials”, etc. ) • Troop has some equipment that can be borrowed (tents, stoves, backpacks, patrol boxes, etc. ) • Don’t rush to buy everything at once! Let your scout see and try other gear to know what he might like
