Points of Emphasis for the Spring Season Continue to implement strategies for GAME MANAGEMENT A sub-theme that will help with GAME MANAGEMENT is PERCEPTION Continue with emphasis of PROFESSIONALISM (being on time, everyone looking the part, etc. ). Continue to use NFHS rules and mechanics (reporting cards to the coaches, clock management, nuisances of the NFHS rules)

Game Management If everyone in the crowd is going “ooohhh” and you DON’T THINK it’s a foul……it’s a foul. YOU CANNOT BLOW THE WHISTLE ENOUGH IN SCHOOL SOCCER! When coaches are protesting calls from the opening whistle……DEAL WITH IT! It doesn’t have to be with a card but at least acknowledge it PROFESSIONALLY without threats. FOUL LANGUAGE heard by all needs to be cautioned. FOUL LANGUAGE with the word YOU involved needs to be EJECTED.

PERCEPTION Think about the article I sent from the NCHSAA Supervisor of Officials about ADVANCING IN OFFICIATING. Many of these things deal with PERCEPTION. 1. You Do Not Look The Part 2. You Do Not Know The Rules 3. You Do Not Have a Patient Whistle 4. You Are Dishonest 5. You Do Not Have Integrity 6. You Lack Humility 7. You Do Not Seek Feedback or Accept Constructive Criticism 8. You Are Not A Good Partner 9. You Do Not Pay Attention to Details 10. You Do Not Prepare

Let’s Not Forget Professionalism What time do we need to be on the field in uniform for a 5: 30 PM kick off? What time do we need to be on the field in uniform for a 6: 30 PM kick off? What do we do during the time we are on the field before kick-off? Being on time and looking over the field = GOOD PERCEPTION

Spring Points of Emphasis 1. Pre-Game Contact 48 hours before the game. -Talk about CARPOOLING!!!!!! -Most assignments are done with this in mind. *The spring brings about a ton of last minute assignments due to cancelations. If you are the REFEREE in a 2 or 3 person crew, make contact with the other members of the referee team.

Spring Points of Emphasis 2. GAME MANAGEMENT: It starts with PERCEPTION. Look alike (as much as possible) Inspect the field Conduct a pre-game with the clock operator Warm-up as a crew Manage coaches who protest decisions early in the game

Spring Points of Emphasis 3. Use NFHS mechanics Report the cards to the Coaches. AR’s if the referee forgets to do this, remind them from the line! For all NCHSAA games, make sure there is a clock operator Use NCHSAA terminology. THERE IS NO VIOLENT CONDUCT! (What do we use instead? )

Inclement Weather Procedures If the weather is “iffy” contact the school by 230 to see if the game will be played If the weather is “iffy” monitor your email throughout the day. Cancelations will be made through EMAIL. If 20 games are cancelled, I cannot call 60 referees in an hour window. If it rained the night before, still be mindful to contact the school in the early afternoon. Some schools will protect their field because it is wet from rain from the night before
