Driving Question Driving Question: How has transportation changed in Canada over the past 100 years? This topic is important because it affects many people of all ages. Transportation has changed the way we do everything in the world such as trading and moving goods from one place to another, therefore making it important.
What I wanted to learn When transportation became a big deal and used in everyday situations. How people got around when the roads were too muddy.
What I did learn I learned that the wheel was one of the best inventions of this time, not just for being able to be used in transportation but helping the people of that time continue trading more and more product. Being able to transport goods faster helped people make more money and making them be able to make a living for themselves.
Road Transport I wanted to focus my project more on road transportation than other ways of transportation because I think it is more relatable to everyone in the world.
John L. Mc. Adam John L. Mc. Adam was born Sept. 21, 1756 and died on Nov. 26, 1836. He was an engineer and a road-builder. He invented the process “macadamisation” for building roads with a smooth hard surface, using controlled materials of mixed particle size and predetermined structure that would be more durable and less muddy than soil-based tracks.
Early Road Transportation Before cars were invented, people would use horses to get around. Later came the wheel which changed the way we transport not only people but also goods to other parts of the world.
Highways The longest highway in the world is called the Trans Canada Highway (TCH) which stretches from St. John’s, NL to Victoria, BC being 7821 km long. It opened officially by prime minister John Diefenbaker in 1962. The first successful crossing of Canada’s TCH was by car in 1912 by Thomas Wilby.
Advantages/Disadvantages Trades Moving goods Travel Mail Door-to-door service Reliable Fast Efficient Accidents Pollution Traffic Jams Costs Bad Weather
Conclusion Transportation has changed in Canada over the past 100 years significantly. It has changed from railroads, trucking, aviation, waterways, highways to public transportation. From changes to the road to the changes of the different transportations used, we have been able to adapt to these changes and build from those to help better support our population.
