TRANSPORTATION Moving us and our world!
OBJECTIVES: • Define transportation • Explain how transportation affects our lives • Explain the four modes of transportation • Explain the six technological systems in transportation. • Define intermodalism
TRANSPORTATION • Transportation is the movement of goods or people from one place to another.
TRANSPORTATION • Transportation affects every aspect of our lives, from our education, to the food we eat, to the clothes we wear, transportation is involved in all of it!
TRANSPORTATION • Stop and think about this for a moment: • How did you get here today? • How did the food and all the ingredients of that food get to your house? • Where did your clothes come from and how did they get here? • Transportation affects almost everything!
THE FOUR MODES OF TRANSPORTATION • • • Land Water Air Space There are different types of transportation in each area.
LAND DIVISION • • • Bicycle Four-wheeler Car, truck, van motorcycle Bus Train Escalator Semi crane • • • Tractor Snowmobile Conveyor Tube Pipeline Elevator Subway Cable car segway
WATER DIVISION • • Barges Canoes Motorboats Sailboats Tugboats Container ships Freighters • • Hovercrafts Submarines Ocean liners Aircraft carriers Tankers Ferries rafts
AIR DIVISION • • • Balloons Gliders Airships Passenger planes Cargo planes helicopters
SPACE DIVISION • • • Missiles Rockets Space shuttle Satellites Rovers
• • • THE SIX TECHNOLOGICAL SYSTEMS IN TRANSPORTATION Propulsion Suspension Guidance Control Support structure
PROPULSION • What makes it go. What pushes it down the road, through the water, or into the air. • Examples would be the internal combustion engine and the electric motor.
SUSPENSION • The supporting of the vehicles weight. • Examples would be tires and shocks for cars, wing design for airplanes, and hull design for boats.
GUIDANCE • Directing the vehicle along a certain path. • Examples would be rails for trains, rudders for boats, and steering systems for cars.
CONTROL • This area would be the starting, stopping and controlling of the speed of a vehicle. • Examples would be braking and acceleration systems.
SUPPORT • No transportation mode can operate without support. This may be in the form of moving people or cargo to the vehicle, or it could be the maintenance of the vehicle. • Examples would be such things as airports, shipping ports, parts stores, gas stations, repair shops, and launch pads.
STRUCTURE • This area pertains to the actual structure of the vehicle, what it is made from and how they are made. • Today the industry continues to look for lighter and stronger materials. • Examples of materials used are metal, plastic, aluminum, fiberglass, and rubber.
INTERMODALISM • Intermodal transportation happens when two or more modes of transportation are used to transport people or goods. • A good example would be if you were going on a cruise. You would probably use a car to get to the airport, a plane to get to the port, and a ship to take the cruise.
WHAT IS TRANSPORTATION? • the movement of goods or people from one place to another.
