Transport of Materials • Passive transport--Movement of molecules across a membrane using no energy. Occurs from higher to lower concentration • Ex. water Plasma membrane Concentration gradient
Transport of Materials Facilitated diffusion--Passive transport with the help of transport proteins which open up like gates or form channels. Occurs from high to low concentration Ex. Sugars and amino acids Plasma membrane Channel proteins Concentration gradient
Transport of Materials • Active transport--Movement of materials through a membrane that requires energy. Occurs from lower concentration to higher concentration (against the concentration gradient) http: //nortonbooks. com/college/biology/animations/ch 06 p 01. htm • Ex. minerals Carrier proteins Plasma membrane Concentration gradient Cellular energy Step 1 Step 2
How do large materials enter and exit cells? • Endocytocis—When materials enter a cell; cell surrounds particles Nucleus Wastes Digestion Endocytosis Exocytosis
Transport of Large Particles • Example--White blood cell engulfing bacteria http: //www. zoology. ubc. ca/~berger/B 200 sample/unit_8_protein_processing/images_unit 8/14_28. jpg http: //www. bbc. co. uk/schools/gcsebitesize/img/biwhitebloodcell. jpg
Two types of endocytosis: • Pinocytosis: movement of fluids into a cell; cell “drinking” • Phagocytosis: movement of solids into a cell; cell “eating”
Transport of Large Particles • Exocytosis—when materials exit a cell or are expelled from the cell Nucleus Wastes Digestion Endocytosis Exocytosis
Transport of Large Particles • Example--Cell getting rid of waste http: //www. pigur. co. il/imgcell/exocytosis. jpg
What does it mean by saying that a cell is specialized? • Cell specialization: Cells perform different functions within a multicellular organism – Ex. Red blood cells carry oxygen pancreatic cells produce insulin
