Translation Memory A translation memory, or TM, is a database that stores "segments", which can be sentences, paragraphs or sentence-like units (headings, titles or elements in a list) that have previously been translated, in order to aid human translators. The translation memory stores the source text and its corresponding translation in language pairs called “translation units”. (source: Wikipedia)
What does a TM do? Makes sure that translators need not translate similar or identical sentences more than once. Moja djevojka ima novi crveni bicikl. My girlfriend has got a new red bicycle. Translation Memory Moja djevojka ima novi crni bicikl. My girlfriend has got a new red bicycle.
How does a TM work? Each unit of text in the original and target language is stored in a database (. . After it has been confirmed by the translator. ) When the translator starts working on a new unit, the software automatically searches for similar units in the database and suggests hits. Similarity is computed on the basis of string comparison (surface level). Usually only hits above a certain threshold will be offered (default 70 %). 100 % = exact match 99 – 70 % = fuzzy match < 70 % = no match
How does a TM work? Basic idea: repetition Suitable for certain text types: user manuals, technical descriptions, business reports, legal texts etc. Unsuitable for: literary, newpaper, academic texts etc.
