What’s the BIG Deal? • Parents are very nervous about how their child will do SOCIALLY – Will they cry? – Will they get along with the other children? – What if they don’t like school? – What if they don’t like the teacher?

What’s the BIG Deal? cont • Parents are very worried about how their child will do EDUCATIONALLY – Will they be able to learn at the same pace? – Will they start out behind? – What if they can’t learn? – What if they lag behind?

What’s the BIG Deal? cont • Parents are worried about how THEY will do: – What if I cry? – What if I don’t like the teacher? – What if the teacher doesn’t like ME? – What if I don’t know any of the other PARENTS?

Explain What Will Happen • Talk to the parents about how the transition will occur • Answer any questions • Arrange for a tour of the facility • Allow the students to accompany the parents on the tour

Make a Home Visit • Observe the interactions in the home • See the educational activities available in the home • Evaluate the learning environment in the home, books, games, letters, etc • Answer questions
