Theory Overview/Brief History: Transition to the Workplace Dr. Judy Duchscher’s Theory (Nursing the Future, 2020)
Transition shock: -Many students don’t realize there will be a major transition that will take place after graduation. -A multifaceted experience (ie. spiritual, cultural, emotional, physical). (Duchscher, 2012)
Stage 1: ‘Doing’ - CHANGE Adjusting → to new roles, responsibilities, and relationships within professional practice and on a more personal level Accommodating → new practice procedures and policies (may have the opportunity to incorporate own practices) Learning → new skills, roles , responsibilities and knowledge Performing → skills, tasks, and procedures Concealing → insecurity, fears of inadequacy, and anxiety from others (Duchscher, 2012)
Stage 2: ‘Being’ - BALANCE Searching → for a sense of balance (between work and life) Questioning → why you left your life behind to pursue nursing (‘working for a living’) Doubting → whether you have chosen the right career path for yourself Examining → The differences between what was learnt in school vs what is learnt in professional practice Revealing → what you do NOT know should not be accompanied with negative repercussions (Duchscher, 2012)
Stage 3: ‘Knowing’ - REGROUPING Exploring → confident in your nursing skill set Separating → yourself as a nurse from others around you Critiquing → your workplace and how it correlates with your own professional values Recovering → passion for your profession and why you chose that path for yourself in the first place Accepting → that there is no perfect practice (Duchscher, 2012)
Remember: the profession is continually evolving and it will be an ongoing adjustment and learning curve : )) (Duchscher, 2012)
