Transitioning From Minitab or SPSS to JMP Software

® Transitioning From Minitab or SPSS to JMP Software Jason Brinkley, Ph. D Senior Researcher, American Institutes for Research Abstract • There is an increasing multitude of software options for processing and analyzing data. The way each piece of software handles processes and outputs analysis can be quite different. • This can make transitions from one software program to another quite difficult. • Sometimes novice and infrequent users struggle with changes in the same program or transitions in analytic programs. Many such users remember the way to perform specific analysis or how to interpret output only by the means they are used to performing such functions in their originally chosen software. • This poster will discuss two free to download white papers that transition Minitab and SPSS users to start using JMP® Software. The Commonalities • JMP, Minitab, and SPSS are all well known with a long standing history of data manipulation, visualization, and statistical analysis. Philosophy Figure 3: Minitab Factorial Designs Figure 4: JMP Factorial Designs • SPSS is a code based software and developed a point and click shell that generates and executes code for individuals unable or unwilling to code. • Minitab has easy to navigate headings designed for the applied mathematician or engineer. Features are designed to match up with common STEM jargon. • JMP has a dynamic focus designed to link data and output in an easy to use manner to bring data analysis to a wide audience. Transition Example – Custom Visuals • SPSS has Chartbuilder for custom visuals that creates code and output from user specified content. • JMP has Graphbuilder which allows users to create visuals in real time from user specified content. • All three software programs import a variety of data into the ‘spreadsheet’ type format. Transition Example - Design of Experiments • Minitab and JMP are both popular software for DOE. With easy menus for creating randomized data templates that allow researchers to implement a variety of designs with embedded options to analyze the collected data.
