The Joint Steering Committee and RDA team JSC Meeting, March 2009, Chicago L-R Marjorie Bloss (Project Manager); Margaret Stewart (CCC); Alan Danskin (BL); John Attig (ALA); Barbara Tillett (LC); Deirdre Kiorgaard (ACC); Hugh Taylor (CILIP); Nathalie Schultz (JSC Secretary); Tom Delsey (RDA Editor) 4
Why do we need a new set of cataloguing rules? 5
The information environment in 21 st century It’s not just about text The content is more important than the carrier Carriers of information change with bewildering speed ICT breaks down physical barriers Volume increases exponentially It’s for everyone not just a highly educated elite 6
Organisation of information Information compressed to fit space Structure constrains access, e. g. name, title Relationships constrained by time and cost Shared resources 7
RDA: combining the wisdom of past experience with today’s technology 8
Key Features of RDA Instructions derived from AACR 2 Conceptual model is user focused Formalised: sound metadata principles Extensible Semantic Web Compatible Internationalised 9
RDA: Scope The scope of RDA is intended to be general RDA provides a comprehensive set of guidelines and instructions covering all types of content and media, including music, notated movement and recorded sound The organisation of RDA follows FRBR structure RDA provides instructions for the identification and description of entities and for expressing the relationships between entities 10
RDA Scope RDA defines vocabularies for expressing relationships: Between resources e. g. , between a musical work and the libretto Between resources and Persons, Families and Corporate Bodies e. g. between a musical work and the arranger Between Persons, Families and Corporate Bodies e. g. between a group and its members. 11
RDA and ISBD JSC has worked closely with IFLA ISBD Review Group RDA is format neutral: it does not mandate ISBD order or punctuation RDA Appendix D, Record Syntaxes for Descriptive Data contains mappings between ISBD and RDA to enable an ISBD display 12
New Terminology RDA terms Access point Authorized access point Variant access point Tillett RDA Nuts and Bolts 31/3/09 AACR 2 terms Heading Added Entry Authorized heading See references 13
New Terminology RDA terms AACR 2 terms Main Entry Preferred title Name of the work (to include name of creator when applicable) Tillett RDA Nuts and Bolts 31/3/09 Uniform title Authority control 14
Level of description RDA 0. 6 RDA Elements Support FRBR user tasks Core element set “RDA Core is a floor, not a ceiling…”. Minimum necessary to satisfy user tasks. Metadata Registry (provisional) AACR 2 1. 0 D AACR 2 defined 3 levels of description appropriate for the, “purpose of the catalogue or catalogues. ” First = Minimum Second = Full Third = Comprehensive http: //metadataregistry. org/schemap rop/list/schema_id/1. html 15
RDA/ONIX Framework for Resource Description RDA Media Type (3. 2) “…the general type of intermediation device required to view, play, run, etc. , the content of a resource “ e. g. , audio, computer Carrier Type (3. 3) “…format of the storage medium and housing of a carrier in combination with the type of intermediation device required to view, play, run, etc. , the content of a resource. “ e. g. , audio disc, computer disc Content Type (6. 10) “…fundamental form of communication in which the content is expressed and the human sense through which it is intended to be perceived. For content expressed in the form of an image or images, content type also reflects the number of spatial dimensions in which the content is intended to be perceived and the perceived presence or absence of movement. ” e. g. , performed music AACR 2 1. 1 C General Material Designation (LIST 2) Activity card Art Original Art Reproduction Braille Cartographic material Chart… …Electronic resource Filmstrip Flash card… …Microform Microscope slide Model Music… …Sound recording 16
Rule of Three Works of Shared responsibility n AACR 2 imposed limits on recording shared responsibility n RDA does not impose any limit on recording persons, families or corporate bodies with principle responsible for creating a work Compilations n In AACR 2 compilations without a collective title are entered under the name of the first work listed in the compilation n In RDA separate access points are created for each work in the compilation Treaties n AACR 2: enter under title of more than 3 parties n RDA: enter under first named party; enter under title only if unable to determine first named party. 17
RDA: Timescale RDA Content completed June 2009 RDA Software delivered July 2009 Beta testing July-September 2009 RDA Product released end 2009 National Library testing and evaluation 2010 BL Implementation – not earlier than second half 2010 18
RDA: How much will it cost? Not finalised. RDA Element set and vocabularies will be open source data. Different versions of RDA offering varying levels of interactivity Subscription model No print product on first release 19
RDA: JSC Working Documents RDA Table of Contents Changes from AACR 2 Mappings RDA Elements Table Updated prospectus 20
RDA Online and Local System Designed to allow integration with library systems Initially view in parallel through Web connection 2121
RDA Online/ Implementation ILS: Input templates for cataloging n Listing the elements and links to RDA guidelines (depends on the ILS vendor) Workflows in RDA Online n Step-by-step process with link to RDA guidelines n RDA Online wizard to create your own “workflows” n Share “workflows” 22
RDA and local system configuration Changes to indexing Changes to value lists Changes to templates Changes to validation Changes to Macros Changes to import/export profiles 23
RDA: Record Exchange RDA records compatible with AACR 2 records n RDA records will indicate (LDR/17) ISBD or non. ISBD n RDA flag in 040 $e MARC 21 changes approved by MARBI at ALA Midwinter n Proposal 2009 -1/1 -2 & Discussion Paper DP 20091/1 – Predominantly affect authority format – Introduction of explicit elements is good metadata practice 24
RDA and “Legacy” data Few changes to legacy data, exceptions: LDR am a 2200193 u 4500 001 011274588 – Bible O. T. / Old Testament 008 910815 s 1956 enk || ||eng – Bible N.
