INVOLVE THE RIGHT PEOPLE • The young person with autism must be central in any decisions about such changes. It concerns everyone. All teachers and even the children……discuss it. Talk about it.
STRUCTURE TRANSITION TIMES • Structure can be difficult for a child with autism. That is putting what is going to happen in a day in a logical order in their mind. • You may find that behavioural difficulties occur more in transition times between activities. • Some ways to reduce this are: • Use a visual timetable so they can see what will be happening throughout the day • Show long they will need to wait before an activity begins with a sand timer or stickers on a clock • Prepare a box or bag of familiar items to touch or smell during transitions
USE VISUAL SUPPORTS USE OF OBJECTS, PHOTOS, ICONS OR WORDS/ • Visual supports can help you to explain what will be happening. • Show the child photos of: • a new place(a new church) • A new teacher • Make a book of photos of the new change or put it on a device
USE OF OBJECTS, PHOTOS, ICONS OR WORDS
BE AWARE OF ANXIETY • Look out for signs of anxiety-crying , not sleeping, crying etc • Explain the good things about change • Create a social story to explain what they could do if they are anxious
