Transition Element Ionic Compounds
Review • Transition Elements – Metals – Groups 3 -12 – No exact number of valence electrons • Therefore, can form multiple types of positive ions (cations)
Roman Numerals 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. I II IV V VI VII
Naming Transition Element Ionic Compounds 1. Write metal first 2. Use roman numerals to indicate the oxidation number (charge) of the metal 3. Write the roman numeral in parenthesis following the name of the metal unless the charge is 1 4. Then write nonmetal changing the ending to “ide”
• Example: Cu. Cl 1. Copper 2. Cu+1 since Cl is -1 and the charges must balance 1= I 3. Copper (I) or Copper 4. Copper Chloride
Practice Problem 1: Write the name of the following ionic compound Cu. Cl 2
Practice Problem 2: Write the name of the following ionic compound Cr 2 O 3
Practice Problem 3: Write the name of the following ionic compound Pb. O 3
Transition Metal Ionic Compound Chemical Formulas 1. Write symbols for each ion with metal written first 2. Number in parenthesis is the oxidation number (charge) for the transition element ion 3. Balance charges and write subscripts if extra atoms are needed to get a net charge of zero
• Example: zinc (II) chloride 1. Zn. Cl 2. Zn+2 Cl 3. Zn. Cl 2
Practice Problem 4: Write the chemical formula for titanium (II) phosphide.
Practice Problem 5: Write the chemical formula for osmium (III) oxide.
Practice Problem 6: Write the chemical formula for Manganese (II) oxide.
