RD 3 GRADE TEKS The student is expected to: (b)(1)(f) analyze mathematical relationships to connect and communicate mathematical ideas (b)(1)(g) display explain and justify mathematical ideas and arguments using precise mathematical language in written and oral communication.
TRANSFORMATION Definition: to change the form of a figure without in general changing its value. A rotation, reflection, and translation are types of transformations. In other words you can change a figure by changing its position, or by turning it, but it is still the same figure!
EXAMPLE OF A TRANSFORMATION 1 2 If you notice figure 1 has been turned or rotated, and the result is figure 2. The position has changed but the figure has not, this is a type of transformation.
THE LINK BELOW WILL TAKE YOU TO SEE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF TRANSFORMATIONS! http: //www. mathsisfun. com/geometry/transformations. html Check it out!
TRANSLATION Definition: a motion of a plane that moves every point of the plane a specified distance, in a specified direction, along a straight line. A translation, is to move a figure over by sliding it straight over without twisting or turning it!
EXAMPLE OF A TRANSLATION: Notice that in this figure, each point has been slid across the same specified distance along a straight line, without twisting or turning the figure. Therefore, this is an example of a translation!

REFLECTION Definition: a flip, the mirror image of a figure reflected across A reflection is like a line. when you look in the mirror it is exactly the same, except it’s flipped!
EXAMPLE OF A REFLECTION To the left you will notice two different types of reflections. One over a vertical line, and the other over a horizontal line. In both examples the figures remain exactly the same, they have only been flipped, or reflected.

ROTATION Definition: A transformation that rotates a geometric figure about a fixed point. A rotation is when one point of a figure stays put and you turn all the others in the same direction!
EXAMPLE OF A ROTATION: The middle figure demonstrates a rotation. One point is fixed and the others are turning in the same direction, in this case, clockwise.
