Transformational Leadership with Howard Schultz
Idealized Influence "At this time in America, there are 5. 6 million people who do not see themselves in the American dream, and we have to reverse that" • Transformational leaders look at the big picture • HS has always made it clear that Starbucks is not about coffee, it is about creating a company that will do real good for the economy and all involved • His goals are to create opportunities for employees, farmers, investors, and consumers: goals which significantly exceed those of many product-based companies
Inspirational Motivation “Our Country deserves a president humble enough to see leadership not as an entitlement but as a privilege” • HS is very open about his personal views and upbringing • In interviews, he often references his blue-collar upbringing and the struggles that continue to motivate him today • His speeches are emotionally evoking and genuine, and he uses real examples to portray the goals he has for the climate of the company – Ex. He tells a story how one of his baristas became friends with a frequent customer who needed a kidney transplant, and they were a match.
Intellectual Motivation “Not innovation for innovation’s sake but innovation that is relevant, usable, and, in our case, core to the culture. ” • Transformational leaders make innovative changes that are often opposed but are worth the risk for the greater good • Heavily opposed, HS took 10, 000 managers to New Orleans for a 4 day training which included contributing over 54, 000 volunteer hours in order to “remind people of our character and values” • Refused to lower quality of products regardless of the profit opportunities
Individualized Consideration “Coffee is what Starbucks makes as a product, but that’s not the business we’re in” • Transformational leaders ultimately care about multiple aspects of their employees’ well-being, not only their work-life • Starbucks was the first company in the US to offer health insurance and stock options for both full-time and part-time employees • Starbucks College Achievement Plan is the first of its kind to offer completely free college programs online for all employees
