Transcription and Translation Activity 1. You will work with the person sitting next to you. 2. One of you will take the role of RNA polymerase and transcribe the DNA information onto a piece of Messenger RNA (your paper) from the DNA stored in the nucleus( index cards on the rolling table by white board). 3. You will then bring your m. RNA back to your table (The ribosome) and use the decoding ring to translate the m. RNA into an amino acid sequence. 4. When you are done you should have one piece of paper. For each DNA strand you should have an m. RNA strand the amino acid sequence it codes for.
Example 1. DNA: ATG AAA AAC AAG GTA CAC ATC TAG m. RNA: UAC UUU UUG UUC CAU GUG UAG AUC t. RNA: AUG AAA AAC AAG GUA CAC AUC UAG *to translate from m. RNA to amino acid use your decoder ring. Amino: TYR – PHE – LEU – PHE – HIS – VAL – S - ILE Acid
Transcription/Translation Activity • The following DNA sequences are stored in the nucleus and contain code that can be translated into words. Use your knowledge of transcription by taking the role of RNA polymerase and creating a m. RNA strand. • Base Pairing DNA RNA A = U T = A C = G G = C
• 1. DNA: m. RNA: AA: • 2. DNA: m. RNA: AA: • 3. DNA: m. RNA: AA: • 4. DNA: m. RNA: AA: • 5. DNA: m. RNA: AA: ATG AAA AAC AAG GTA CAC ATC TAG ATG AAA AAC AAT TGC ACG TAG ATG TAA ACC ACT ACA TAG ATG AGA AGT AGG AGA AGC ATA ATC TAG ATT CAA CAC ATC CAG CCA CAT TAG
