What is Skills Commons? q The US DOL’s TAACCCT program has created a free and open online library called Skills Commons containing free and open learning materials and program support materials for job-driven workforce development. The Open Educational Resources (OER) are produced by TAACCCT-funded community colleges across the nation and can be found, reused, revised, retained, redistributed, and remixed by individuals, institutions, and industry. You can browse by industry or grant project. This is a good place to look as you start to create new curriculum. You may find something on here that can provide the groundwork for what you need. What is Creative Commons? It is our responsibility to license to the public, all work created with the support of the CAMI grant to ensure that the Federal investment of these funds has as broad an impact as possible. This is done through Creative Commons which is a free legal tool that allows you to copyright work. If you decide to use documentation from Skills Commons as a basis for your new curriculum, we must attribute the new work to the original creator. This is a different process than licensing, but equally important. (Licensing and Attributing will be done by Denise) Take a look around:

What do you need to know? Content must license or attribute through Creative Commons

What do you need to know? Content must license or attribute through Creative Commons if: q Ø You are Creating New Material, Ø You are Changing Material that currently exists at your school, or Ø You are Using Material taken from Skills Commons (either as-is, or altered). As a habit, please submit all work to the CAMI office so that we can decide with you whether or not the material is subject to licensing requirements. You will not be asked to upload content. This will be done by Denise. We will look to the curriculum writers and Manufacturing Directors at each college to verify information and supply additional documentation (if necessary) as we prepare it for submission.

Steps - Submitting Work to Denise 1. Develop materials either by: A. Writing something completely new, B. Using material found on Skills Commons, or C. Using material from Skills Commons but making edits. 2. Submit Materials to Denise 3. Denise will look over the materials and reach out to you with any questions or needs for clarification. 4. Once any revisions are considered, the material is ready for licensing in Creative Commons and then upload into Skills Commons. 5. The file will then be sent back to you with the licensing tag on the documents.

Share and Submit All colleges should share information when producing curriculum, videos, outreach materials, etc. We want to ensure, to the best of our ability, that we don’t replicate each other’s work. It isn’t useful to have three colleges creating three different Blueprint Reading courses, unless there is a reason that they must be different. Please submit any new materials to Denise and Michelle and they will determine whether or not it must be licensed and/or uploaded.
