Tecniche per la traduzione in inglese 1. Read the whole text through and get a sense of the overall meaning or gist. 2. Then work at sentence level. For each, try to produce an English equivalent that sounds right. 3. You cannot often translate word for word. Mostly, you need to paraphrase: i. e. find a phrase that has the same meaning, but uses different words. 4. Try to work out the meaning of any unfamiliar words in the sentence. Consider words surrounding the unfamiliar word and try out words that would fit, using an English sentence with gaps. E. g. Le ragazze leggono un libro = The girls *? * a book. 5. Think about the context and use common sense. What makes sense in the context of the rest of the text? 6. Once you have the meaning of the sentence in your head, play with the order of the words until you have English that sounds natural when you read it. 7. The golden rule: read aloud what you have written. If it doesn’t sound right to you, it probably isn’t.

Identity and culture: celebrations and festivals Il 21 giugno in Italia c’é la Festa della musica. É un grande festival gratuito, molto popolare. I partecipanti sono amatori o professionisti. Molti italiani suonano uno strumento musicale. Il festival é cominciato nel 1982. On the 21 st June in Italy there is a Music Festival. It is a big, very popular, free festival. The participants are amateurs or professionals. Many Italians play a musical instrument. The festival started in 1982.

Identity and culture: socializing with friends Ho molti amici. Durante il tempo libero usciamo insieme. Dopo la scuola andiamo al parco o al centro commerciale. Il fine settimana scorso siamo andati al cinema per vedere un film comico. In dicembre ci piacerebbe andare ad un concerto di musica rock. I have many friends. In passato c’era un mercato che era molto antico. Il mese prossimo si aprirá un nuovo centro sportivo. I live in a big city. It is interesting as there is a lot to see and to do. One can visit the museum of modern art. In the past there was a very old market. Next month a new sport center will open.

School: school rules A Genova le lezioni alla scuola superiore cominciano alle 8 di mattina. Gli studenti devono arrivare in orario. Bisogna rispettare gli adulti. I cellulari e gli apparecchi elettronici sono proibiti. In passato si potevano utilizzare. In Genoa lessons in secondary school start at 8 am. Students have to arrive on time. I don’t like Biology, at all, because it is difficult. Last year I got good marks in history. After the holidays I want to do more sport.

Future aspirations, study and work: jobs Lavoro in un hotel dal lunedí al venerdí. Il lavoro é piuttosto difficile perché il mio capo é severo. Il mese scorso ho guadagnato ottanta euro, ma solo perché ho lavorato anche il sabato. Con i soldi che guadagno, vorrei comprarmi una macchina quando avrò diciott’anni. I work in a hotel from Monday to Friday. The job is quite difficult because my boss is strict. Last month I earned eighty euros, but only because I worked on Saturdays as well. With the money I earn, I would like to buy a car when I will be eighteen.

Future aspirations, study and work: training Mio fratello sta facendo un’esperienza lavorativa. Trova il lavoro piuttosto noioso e deve lavorare per molte ore. Credo che questo non sia giusto! Durante le vacanze estive ho lavorato in un ufficio, per guadagnare qualche soldo. Dopo la scuola vorrei fare la giornalista. My brother is doing a work experience. He finds the job rather boring and he has to work for long hours. I believe that this is not fair! During the summer holidays I worked in an office to earn some money. International and global dimension: sports events Elena Linari é un’eccellente giocatrice di calcio. Gioca per la nazionale Italiana, ma durante la settimana lavora in un ufficio. Non ha partecipato alla coppa del mondo. E` dovuta restare in Italia a lavorare, per guadagnare soldi. Elena Linari is an excellent football player. She plays for the Italian national team, but during the week works in an office. She hasn’t taken part in the World Cup because she had to stay in Italy to work to earn money.

La vita qui é molto semplice, in quanto la gente vive a stretto contatto con la natura. Inoltre in inverno nevica spesso. Le montagne innevate sono, a mio avviso, meravigliose. My name is Giorgia and I am Swiss. I live in a very pretty, small mountain town , in the Italian part of Switzerland. Life is very simple there, as people live in close contact with nature. Moreover, in winter it often snows. Mountains covered in snow are, in my opinion, marvellous.

International and global dimension: music events Mi piace la musica pop. Non ho un gruppo preferito, ma mi piace la musica pop italiana. In città c’è un teatro in cui si tengono molti concerti. Il mese scorso sono andata ad un concerto rock. I biglietti erano costosi perché il gruppo é molto popolare. I like pop music. I don’t have a favourite band, but I like Italian pop music. In town there is a theatre where a lot of concerts take place. Last month I went to a rock concert. The tickets were expensive, because the group is very popular.
