Traditional Folk Medecine
Explanation Traditional folk medicine - part of alternative medicine, which includes knowledge about diseases, treatment methods and technology that are passed among the people from generation to generation. Thus, this term includes barely observable diversity prevailing among the people notions about diseases and how to treat them.
Keeping the Traditional Alive
Folk medicine and beliefs differ from culture to culture and reflect the history and traditions of each culture. All these practices, however, have one thing in common; they are passed on from generation to generation by word of mouth and imitation and represent a system of practices rather than a collection off unrelated remedies.
The Future of Traditional Medicine
Over the last ten years, there has been a growth of interest in alternative remedies in developed countries. The majority of the population of Great Britain for example , believes that traditional and herbal remedies should be available via the National Health Service. Many modern doctors share this belief and increasingly use a combination of traditional folk remedies and conventional medicines.
Holistic Medicine
Holistic medicine is the belief in treating the person as a whole – including their emotions and general health – rather than just treating the symptoms of a disease. Preventative and therapeutic forms of treatment range from reflexology and aromatherapy to gemstone and crystal therapy.
Although holistic medicine is not a new idea, such alternative forms of therapy have been gaining popularity in recent years. Increasing numbers of people avoid orthodox methods of treatment in favour of more natural (and often more successful) processes. Holistic medicine may not be for everyone, but more and more people are using these to cure a wide range of medical problems.
