TRADITIONAL APULIAN COSTUMES

Land of ancient traditions, Apulia, despite the fast passing of time, and the changing

Land of ancient traditions, Apulia, despite the fast passing of time, and the changing uses, still saves beautiful costumes in almost every corner of its territory. They are costumes that can be admired especially during the festivals in honor of the patron saint, parties that always attract crowds in religious pilgrimages from the nearby towns and, sometimes, from all over Apulia. In Salento men’s clothing consisted of short and tight trousers, the legs were covered with colourful woollen stockings, and the waistcoat and the short jacket were trimmed with a black ribbon. They were usually clean shaven (They didn’t usually wear a beard) On their heads they wore the Phrygian cap in the shape of a cone with the tip bent on the right ear. Otherwise they wore a woollen flat cap. They wore large shoes. The suit was always deep blue or white, yellow, pink or black. while the fabric could be wool or cotton. The seamen put on their shirts cotton waistcoats and in winter they wore hooded coats. Costumes from Alberobello

Women had a long vest taken in at the waist with a belt where a small fabric bag hung, so the long skirt, with a series of large pleats, went to join the tight-fitting top. They sometimes wore a corset or a top, a scarf which covered the breast and a fine cloth blouse. They wore white or red woollen or cotton socks. Shoes were made of tanned calfskin with iron buckling. Their hair was divided by a straight parting and gathered up behind the neck. Women of all ages covered their head and shoulders with headscarves and scarves. The headscarf was dark for the older women and colourful for the younger ones. COSTUMES FROM MONTE SANT’ANGELO
