Prohibition- eighteenth amendment and Volstead act • 1920’s prohibition : the restriction of the production, sale, transportation, importation, and exportation of alcoholic beverages • Began when the 18 th to the constitution went into effect on January 16, 1920 • The Volstead act had been passed on October 28, 1919. enacted to enforce the 18 th amendment; which was ratified on January 16, 1919
Bootleggers • A person who created and/or obtained liquor – Liquor was outlawed in the USA during 1920’s • Could make liquor in bath tubs using simple ingredients • Often owned easy-speaks – Secret bars where customers hid from the authorities in order to drink the illegal liquor • Punishments-were sent to jail to serve a long sentence or had to pay fines and fees
19 th amendment • During the 1920 s, women were more liberated. • Women wanted same political and social rights as men • The 19 th amendment gave women the right to vote and gave them equal rights as men
Flappers • A fashionable young woman who drank, smoked, danced, wore makeup and was intent on enjoying herself • Before start of WW 1, Gibson Girls(more conservative flappers) wore a long straight skirt with a high shirt collar and wore her hair long and loosely on top of her head – Feminine but played many sports • Waited for a proper man that had the best intentions with her (marriage)
Flappers Cont. • When the WW 1 men returned home, they were expecting everything to be the same • When they got home, nothing was the same – Men acted differently • Made woman decide that they will live their lives and not wait around for a man • The “Younger Generation” was breaking away and more woman turned to be a “Flapper”
“lost generation” • American writers of the 1920 s were called the lost generation because they didn’t have faith in the cultural ideas • F. Scott Fitzgerald • Ernest Hemingway • William Faulkner • T. S Eliot • Lead to famous novels and other forms of literature.
