Tracking Trigger for the CMS Tracking Detector Executive Summary • The CMS Tracker has been installed and Commissioned with CMS. During the last three weeks it has collected ~290 million Cosmic Triggers which should provide ~ 6 million Tracks in the Silicon Strip Tracker (SST) and ~ 100 K Tracks in the Pixel Detectors • All Tracking System Operated Reliably (> 97%) during the 27 Days of the CRAFT Run. An Initial Analysis of the Data indicates that the Signal to Noise, Track Reconstruction Efficiency and Alignment are all Very Good • Hence CMS has an Excellent Tracking Detector Peter Sharp CERN CMS Tracker 2008 2

Tracking Trigger for the CMS Tracking Detector Scale of the CMS Tracker Project • • ~ 66, 000 Pixels and 10, 000 Silicon Strips ~ 16, 000 Modules ~ 100, 000 APV Chips, ~ 20, 000 ROC Chips ( 250 nm IBM CMOS) ~ 40, 000 Optical Fibres ~ 500 FEDs ( Front End Drivers (Off Detector Data Receivers)) ~ 2500 Power Supplies, ~ 2500 Power Cables ~ 450 Cooling Loops ( Capable of Cooling Tracker to -300 C) ~ 540 Physicists and Engineers (54 Institutes in 10 Countries) Peter Sharp CERN CMS Tracker 2008 15
Tracking Trigger for the CMS Tracking Detector Time Scales Involved in the CMS Tracker Project • • Approval to Completion of Integration – 7 Years First Production Modules to Commissioned Tracker – 3 Year Strip Tracker Transport and Installation – 2 Days Strip Tracker Connection to Services – 3 Months Strip Tracker Commissioning to ~ 99% - 3 Months Pixel Tracker Transport and Installation – 1 Week Pixel Tracker Connection to Services – 1 Week Pixel Tracker Commissioning to ~ 99% - 3 Months Peter Sharp CERN CMS Tracker 2008 16
Tracking Trigger for the CMS Tracking Detector Possible Upgrade Paths • The CMS Pixel Detector can be Removed and Re-Installed in the Annual LHC Shutdown • Hence an Up-Grade to the Pixel Detector can be Installed at any time Provided it uses the same Services, Envelope……. • Propose to Install an Up-Graded Detector after ~ 5 Years • Allows for Development of Cooling, Power and Lower Mass Technologies, including Lower Power Electronics • Prove Concepts to be used in Upgrade of complete Tracker Peter Sharp CERN CMS Tracker 2008 17
Tracking Trigger for the CMS Tracking Detector Possible Upgrade Paths • A Second Phase would involve the Replacement of the Complete Tracker System and would take place in ~ 2017 • Since the Complete Tracking System is modular it can be Disconnected, Removed, Replaced and Reconnected in a Long LHC Shut Down. • Provided it uses the same Services, Envelope…. . • So, What Detector should we think about ? Peter Sharp CERN CMS Tracker 2008 18
Tracking Trigger for the CMS Tracking Detector Executive Summary • The CMS Tracking System is a Massive Step in Tracking • It will give CMS a Massive Advantage for Many Years • So, What do we Consider for an Upgraded Tracking System • Operate the Tracker with LHC –Understand the Problems • Correct all the Issues in Operating a ~ 200 m 2 Tracker • Reduce the Material Budget • Design a Level 1 Tracking Trigger Peter Sharp CERN CMS Tracker 2008 19
Tracking Trigger for the CMS Tracking Detector Executive Summary The Track Trigger Session on Thursday will: • Review the Approaches to Track Triggering • Review the Status and Plans for Simulation • Define the Approach to be used & the Scope of the System • Discuss and Agree what needs to be Done to Develop a Design for a Tracking Trigger System: Sensor Design, Front-End Electronics, On-Module Processing Interconnection Technologies, On-Rod Data Transmission, On-Rod Processing, Off-Rod Data Transmission and Off Detector Processing Peter Sharp CERN CMS Tracker 2008 20
Tracking Trigger for the CMS Tracking Detector Executive Summary • The Conclusion of the Discussion will be Focused on Establishing a Number of Packages with Objectives for 2009 • The Content of the Work Packages will be Refined on Friday Morning and Subsequently Progressed at the Monthly Tracker Upgrade Meetings throughout 2009 • This is a Very Exciting Project and there Enormous Scope for People who Did Not Work on the CMS Tracker to Join the Project and Develop the Next Generation Tracking Systems to Ensure the Continued Success of CMS Physics Peter Sharp CERN CMS Tracker 2008 21
