REGION NAME: LIGURIA SITE NAME: CASTEL GAVONE TIPE OF SITE Archeological/Architectural AREA COVERED The castle is located on the hill overlooking Finalborgo. DATING XI-XVIII Century. In 1715 it was destroyed by Genoa Republic. PHYSICAL AND AESTHETIC FEATURES The Diamond Tower has been entirely preserved and this is the only example in Italy of an owl beak tower. The castle presents the ruins of the ancient structure. In the noble room, you can see some frescos and in the most ancient part there was a cave in which the fortress was built on. Under the castle basement, there is a water cistern which was used during siege periods. HISTORICAL/ARTISTIC INFORMATION The Castle was founded as a marquis palace around 1000 a. C. It was enlarged at the end of 1500’s and occupied by the Spanish who converted it into a military fortress.

LEGAL OWNERSHIP It belongs to Finale Ligure municipality. It can be visited during the planned opening times, but it is necessary to book the visit, which is guided and takes about 1 hr.
