TOTALITARIANISM • Totalitarianism – total control over citizens • Leadership by single person or party • Rejection of democratic government and personal rights and freedoms • Use of propaganda to control citizens • Censorship of ideas against the government • Control of education and media • Use of terror and secret police to enforce government orders
COMMUNISM • Empower proletariat, working class, and take away power from capitalists • Ends all class differences and private property • Collectivization: society will own property together • Society controls industry, production and business • Social Changes • No need for religion • Communal education • Overthrow democratic and capitalist societies
SOCIALISM • Same principles as communism but not the ideas of a violent revolution • Create and economic system where working classes share in wealth • Society would collectively own businesses and control production
RUSSIA STALINISM • Stalinism: a brutal form of communism • Joseph Stalin became the leader of the Communist Party in 1928 • He exiled his biggest rival, Leon Trotsky, and created a totalitarian state • He made the country into an industrial power
RUSSIA STALINISM • Great Purge: terrorized members of the Communist party who he saw a threat • Five Year Plans: change economy from agricultural to industrial economy • Collectivization: confiscated small farms and merged with big farms and forced peasants to work

FASCISM • Fascism: extreme form of nationalism and power to the state • State is above the individual • All-powerful leader backed by the military • Denied people of individual rights and freedoms • Upholds private property and claimed that some people were stronger than others • Created unity and spirit special salutes, rallies and military parades, elite military groups, terror tactics
ITALY • Benito Mussolini ‘Il Duce’ • Founded Fascist Party in 1919 • Black Shirts: supporters who attacked communists or socialists • Won support of industrialists and large land owners
ITALY • 1922 – Fascist Party marched on Rome • King Emmanuel made Mussolini leader of the government • Used secret police and censorship to maintain power • Increased size of the military and invaded Ethiopia in 1935 and 1937
GERMANY • Adolf Hitler ‘Fuhrer’ • Helped found the National Social German Workers Party – Nazi Party • Brown Shirts: special troops who used the swastika as their symbol • He tried to overthrow the Weimar Republic in 1923 but was imprisoned
GERMANY • Mein Kampf – believed Germans were master race ‘Aryans’ • 1933 – named chancellor and began creating a totalitarian state • Gestapo: secret police to enforce control • Controlled economy, built factories and infrastructure, built up the military
JAPAN MILITARISM • Militarism military control of the government • Modern industries outpaced Great Britain and Germany • Military leaders blamed government for depression • Said Japan needed more land natural resources – expansionism
JAPAN MILITARISM • 1931 – Military leaders invaded Manchuria and killed the Prime Minister when he tried to stop them • 1937 – leaders invaded China which united the Chinese people to fight the foreigner
