–Topic Wor Place Mr Exley and Mrs Carr Overview This half term we will be learning about our local area. During the topic we will be looking at maps and identifying the countries of the UK and locating our own local area. We will use maps and atlases to become familiar with the countries of the UK and their physical features and how they differ. In Design Technology we will use images of the local coke ovens to produce our own model. St. Joseph’s Curriculum Intent The Whole Child – Spiritual, Moral and Personal Every Wednesday there will be an opportunity for the children to reflect on the Gospel reading in the Wednesday word. During PSHE lessons children will have the opportunity to take part in circle time activities reflecting on the Statement of the week. Skills and Experiences for Life As part of our Geography we will look at different types of maps and learn how to identify places. In literacy we will learn to write our own instructions and recounts. We will begin to develop our times table knowledge in maths. Listening and oral skills will be developed through class work and role play. Our Place in the Global World During European Languages day we will be learning about other European countries.

We will be learning: To develop our own instructional piece of writing using commands. To create a recount based on our local area and to explore non fiction writing and write a non chronological report. You can help at home by: Working on the spelling rules that the children have been given and reading together at least 5 times per week. Encourage the children in their own personal writing for enjoyment. Mathematics New Vocabulary: representation, partition, combining multiples, division facts, We will be learning: Place value rules and organisation with 2/3 digit numbers. To partition and recombine larger numbers in H, T, O. To recognise and explain patterns when calculating. To problem solve and reason with place value. To add and subtract using place value with H, T, O. We will also be working on multiplication and division skills with year group specific tables and arithmetic tests. You can help at home by: Chanting multiples and tables. Learning number bonds and making division calculations using practical equipment to reinforce understanding. Religious Education Geography New Vocabulary: home, love, family, difference, respect, sorrows, community, Holy Family. We will be learning: To name, locate and identify the characteristics of the four countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom and its surrounding seas. Science New Vocabulary: Animal, plant, habitat, micro-habitat, environment, classify, sort, living things, dead, alive, food chain, healthy We will be learning: • Explore and compare the differences between things that are living, dead and things that have never been alive. • Identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited and describe how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants, and how they depend on each other. • Identify and name a variety of plants and animals in their habitats, including microhabitats. Computing We will be learning: How to stay safe online and how to respond to anything that we are unsure of You can help at home by: Encouraging children to speak out if they are uncertain of anything that happens online. Reminding children that they should never give away any information about themselves to people online.
