Rita Ann Higgins was born in Galway, where she still lives. She was in her late 20 s when she started writing poetry. She has since published nine books of poetry, including Throw in the Vowels: New & Selected Poems (2005, re-issued 2010 with Audio CD of Rita Ann reading a selection of her poems) and Ireland Is Changing Mother (2011) from Blood axe, plus Hurting God (2010) from Salmon. Her many awards include a Peadar O’Donnell Award and several Arts Council bursaries. She is a member of Aosdána.
Introduction Of Poem This Poem is a fine example of modern writing. It is an extract from 52 ways of looking at a poem. the poem has all the feature of modern poverty, which is written free verse. The theme attempts to highlight plight of the underprivileged people of society. Their life is full of hard Struggle.
SUMMARY : - I Some people are aware of how one feels when called a cunt before her own children. It is very derogatory word used against womankind. She belongs to the underprivileged class and knows the hardships faced when one is short for the rent, for the light and for school books. One has really to look down in the absence of these utilities. She also knows that the community welfare waiting rooms are very dirty and full of Smoke.
II The Speaker tells that she knows how people are given Training of talking on a phone by the job search schemes. But the fact is that they only sell dreams of a decent job and not the jobs. She is aware of the problems of being out of job and out of money. Money is the thing that keeps the world going. So being out of money means being out of fashion & out of friend.
III The speaker displays a variety of emotions. She knows the humiliation of using second hand or used products. She also knows how it looks like being treated as a position in the society. The poor have always been treated has people of no consequence. They are hated and rejected. But there is another class of people- the rich who do not know all this. They do not even know if such a class exists.
