Topic: Plants Objectives: • To identify parts of a plant. • Name few plant parts that we eat. • Water is transported through stem to various parts of plants. • Discuss that plants need adequate amount of water, healthy roots, leaves and stem to grow well. PAF Chapter, Junior Section Year 3 Science
Let’s assess your prior knowledge… Why do we need to grow plants? What do plants provide us? Have you ever grown plants at your home? Why did you grow that plant? PAF Chapter, Junior Section Year 3 Science
Parts of a plant: PAF Chapter, Junior Section Year 3 Science
Parts of a plant: The main parts of a plant are: the roots, the leaves, the stem, the fruit and the flower. Each part has a set of jobs to do to keep the plant healthy. 01 02 03 Roots Stem Leave The roots absorb water and minerals from the soil and anchor the plant in the ground. The stem supports the plant above the ground, and carries the water and minerals to the leaves. The leaves collect energy from the Sun and make food for the plant, using an amazing process called Photosynthesis. 04 Flower / Fruit To produce seed for the plant. What do plants need to grow? Water Sunlight Air Soil PAF Chapter, Junior Section Year 3 Science
What is Photosynthesis? Plants breathe carbon dioxide just like we breathe oxygen. When plants breathe carbon dioxide in, they breathe out oxygen. Plants are the major source of oxygen on planet Earth and help keep us alive. We know that plants use sunlight as energy, they get water from rain, and they get carbon dioxide from breathing. The process of taking these three key ingredients and making food is called photosynthesis. PAF Chapter, Junior Section Year 3 Science
Edible parts of plants All plants have the same basic parts; roots, stem, leaves, flowers, seeds, and fruit. The different parts of many plants are edible. Roots: Carrot, Beetroot, Turnip, Radish. Parsnip. Leaves: Spinach, Coriander, Mint, Lettuce. Stem: Asparagus, Potato, Celery, Ginger, Rhubarb. Fruit: Cucumber, Tomato. Flower: Broccoli, Cauliflower. Seed: Corn, Bean, Pea. Do you know? Some parts of plants are dangerous for our health because they are poisonous. The leaves of Tomato, Potato and Rhubarb plants are Poisonous and should not be eaten. ( Refer to page 25 of the textbook) In Switzerland, people posited that eating large quantities of potatoes could cause scrofula, an infection of the lymph nodes in the neck, and many German refused to eat potatoes because they thought of them as poisonous Green plants are green because they contain a pigment called chlorophyll. Poisonous: causing or capable of causing death or illness if taken into body PAF Chapter, Junior Section Year 3 Science
How is water transported to various parts of the plant? Roots absorb water and minerals and transport them to the stem. The water and minerals are then transported to the parts of the plants through the stem. PAF Chapter, Junior Section Year 3 Science
What will happen to the following flowers? Flower A Flower B It will turn red It will turn purple Why? Plants absorb water from the ground up through their roots. The water travels up the stem and is transported to leaves and petals of the flower. Although, our flowers didn’t have roots anymore they were still able to pull water up from the cup into the stem and up through the flower to the petals. PAF Chapter, Junior Section Year 3 Science
Do you want to try it yourself? Things Needed: • White flowers with stem • Cups • Water • Liquid food colouring in a variety of colours Instructions: • To start you will want to trim down the stems of the flower so they fit your cups or glasses. • Add water to each cup. • Then put about 10 -15 drops of food colouring in the water and stir around a bit. • Add at least one flower to each glass of coloured water. • Check in on the flowers every couple of hours and observe any changes. What else do plants need? • • Plants need balanced and regular supply of water in order to grow well. No water or excessive amount of water might kill or wither the plant. Plants need healthy roots, good quality of soil and proper space to grow well. A plant kept in very small pot might not grow well as plants need space to grow and absorb proper nutrients. Outdoor plants need sunlight while indoor plants die when they are exposed to sunlight. PAF Chapter, Junior Section Year 3 Science
