Topic: Forces Lesson 6: Friction and it’s effect Success Criteria - To be able to explain the effects of friction - To understand what friction is - To research and work independently when exploring friction The answer is a force. What is the question?

What is friction? Summary from last week We started looking at friction last week.

What is friction? Summary from last week We started looking at friction last week. The points below summarise what we found: • Friction occurs between two surfaces when they slide against one another. It is a type of force. Think of when someone rubs their hands together when they are cold. This causes friction which helps to warm their hands up. • The rougher the surface the stronger the friction. • Friction slows down moving objects and can stop objects from starting to move. Using everything you have learnt over the last couple of weeks there a number of tasks on the next few slides that you need to complete.

Task 1: Think of as many different uses as you can for using this

Task 1: Think of as many different uses as you can for using this ball of string to increase or decrease friction. For example, it could be cut into small pieces and glued onto the bottom of a shoe to increase the friction and provide the person with more grip. Could you extend this task and give someone in your family a picture of an object you choose then ask them the same question. What answers do they come up with?

Task 2: What would the impact be if these activities were taking place in

Task 2: What would the impact be if these activities were taking place in a world without friction?

Forces – summarise your learning Task 3: Look at everything you have learnt about

Forces – summarise your learning Task 3: Look at everything you have learnt about so far this term. Create a tree map focusing on forces and see how many branches you can add. You may be able to leave space and add further branches to this map once you have completed all of this term’s science lessons.
