TOPIC: Energy AIM: Describe the five forms of energy. Do Now: Let’s go over the HW ditto http: //www. brainpop. com/science/energy/formsofen ergy/ HW: Periodic table Activity – Due Monday Reminders: - Chemistry Castle learning due Tuesday - Atom Drawing/Model due Friday - Chemistry test on Tuesday

5 forms of energy

Mechanical • Energy in moving Energy things

Heat Energy • Thermal Energy • Energy in moving particles of matter

• Faster more heat energy produced

• Usually results from friction

• Causes changes in temperature & phase (solid, liquid, gas)

Almost everything changes to heat energy.

Thermal • Most substances expand expansion when their temp is increased • Ex:

1. Sidewalks have spaces bw squares of concrete bc concrete expands in hot weather

2. Hot air balloons are heated. Its volume increases which causes the balloon to expand.

Chemical • Energy that holds matter together (in Energy bonds) H H O Bond

• Bonds broken chemical energy released

• Food, batteries, fuels (coal & wood), unlit match

Electrical Energy • Energy in moving electrons • Can travel through a vacuum (no air)

• Examples: electricity, light

Nuclear • Energy stored in nucleus of an atom Energy

Mechanical Heat

Flashlight = converts chemical energy (stored in the battery) to electrical energy to light the bulb. The bulb converts the electrical energy to electromagnetic energy. Toaster = converts electrical energy into thermal energy.

Car engine = converts the chemical energy stored in the gasoline into mechanical and thermal energy. Radio = converts electrical energy into sound energy. Human body = converts chemical energy stored in food into mechanical energy for a beating heart and moving muscles.

Let’s summarize… 1. Identify the 5 forms of energy. 2. What is another name for heat energy? 3. Describe what occurs to particles as temperature increases. 4. Describe what occurs to substances when their temperature increases? 5. Where is chemical energy found? How is it released? 6. Where is electromagnetic energy found? Give one example. 7. Where is nuclear energy stored?
