• Endoplasmic reticulum (E. R) is the membranous structure which is continuous to the outer membrane of the nucleus. It is the extension of nuclear membrane and it pours out to and make another compartment/organelle. This is latin word, Endo means inside and plasmic means inside the cytoplasm and reticulum means a network • They have sac-like structures called cisternea and insideof cisternea is the lumen (inner portion) • There are two types of Endoplasmic Reticulum 1. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum 2. Rough endoplasmic reticulum Note: Rough Endoplasmic reticulum got its name due to its rough texture on its upper surface. This roughness is due to presence of ribosomes on it

Transitional Endoplasmic Reticulum: • Some vesicles come from the E. R and go to the golgi bodies, so before going to the golgi bodies the ends of E. R membrane start changing its structures eventually loosing its ribosomes because golgi bodies don’t contain ribosomes that’s why this part of E. R is known as transitional having in phase of transition. The vesicle which is formed at the end of E. R is known as transport vesicle for protein, lipids and enzymes. This transport vesicle then fuses to its end of golgi and become the part of golgi bodies which is further transported to mitochondria. Function of E. R: • Help in protein and lipid synthesis • Help in metabolism and detoxification • Help in manufacturing membranes • Help in hormone production
