Did you know… • The body of an adult contains over 60, 000 miles of blood vessels! • An adult's heart pumps nearly 4000 gallons of blood each day!

Capillaries Arteries Veins
ARTERIES • Carry blood AWAY from heart • Have THICKER walls
• Blood flows FASTER • HIGH pressure
• PULSE can be felt
Branching arteries in the eye
• Most carry blood WITH oxygen
Pulmonary arteries: • Carry DEOXYGENATED blood to the LUNGS
Coronary arteries: • Carry OXYGENATED blood to the myocardium (heart muscle)
Aorta: • Largest artery Carries OXY blood to the rest of the body
Capillaries Arteries Veins
VEINS • Carry blood TO the heart
VEINS • Have THINNER walls • LESS pressure • No PULSE can be felt
• Have VALVES to stop blood from flowing backwards
• Most carry blood WITHOUT oxygen
Pulmonary veins: • Carry OXYGENATED from the LUNGS back to the heart
Superior Vena Cava: • Veins that transports DEOXYGENTATED blood from the upper part of the body back to the heart
Inferior Vena Cava: • Veins that transports DEOXYGENTATED blood from the lower part of the body back to the heart
Coronary veins: • Carry DEOXYGENATED blood from the myocardium (heart muscle) to the vena cava
Artery Vein
Capillaries Arteries Veins
CAPILLARIES • TINY blood vessels • CONNECT arteries to veins
• Walls are very THIN • Walls are one ONE CELL thick
• OXYGEN and NUTRIENTS need to be able to get OUT OF the blood
• CARBON DIOXIDE and other WASTE PRODUCTS move from the BODY CELLS back into the BLOOD https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=Q 530 H 1 Wxt. Ow
ARTERIES CAPILLARIES VEINS
Blood vessels in the right arm and shoulder
Arteries of the lower leg & blood supply to the face & skull
What would happen if the coronary artery that transports oxygenated blood to the heart gets blocked?
What would happen if the artery that transports oxygenated blood to the brain gets blocked?
Let’s summarize… 1. Identify the three types of blood vessels. 2. Why are arteries very muscular? 3. Identify where each type of blood vessel carries blood. 4. Why are capillaries so thin? 5. Why do veins have valves? 6. In which blood vessel is your pulse felt? Explain why. https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=oiqf. NHC 0 l. G 0
Review: Identify the type of blood vessel. 1. Low blood pressure VEINS 2. Where diffusion or exchange of substances occurs. CAPILLARIES 3. Contains valves VEINS 4. Carry blood away from the heart ARTIERIES 5. Connects arteries and veins CAPILLARIES 6. Carry blood away from the heart ARTERIES 7. Red blood cells move in single file CAPILLARIES 8. Elastic and flexible. ARTERIES 9. Used to feel pulse. ARTERIES https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=VVJJHw_Ocp 4
