The Union Jack • The Union Jack is the national flag of Great Britain, made up of 3 flags: the cross of St. George, St. Andrew, and St. Patrick representing England, Scotland Northern Ireland. • “Union” symbolizes the union of England Scotland in 1606, while “Jack” refers to the flag by which a ship shows its nationality.

The “king of the beasts” has been used as a symbol of national strength and of the British monarchy for many centuries. • The other one is a mythical animal that looks like a horse with a long straight horn growing from its forehead and is a symbol of purity.

The National Flag of the Russian Federation • Is made up of three stripes: white, blue, and red. • The white stripe symbolizes nobleness(благородство) and revelation(откровенность). • The red one – loyalty(верность) and honesty(честность). • The blue stripe symbolizes courage(мужество), generosity(великодушие) and love. • It was introduced by Peter the Great in 1699 as the flag of the Russian trade ship. • Later it become one of the national flag of the Russian Empire. • In 1991 it was adopted as the national flag of Russia.

The double – headed eagle • Is the national emblem of the Russian Federation. • It was introduced in Russia in 1497 by Tsar Ivan III after he had married the niece of the last Byzantine Emperor, Sophia. • Ivan looked on Russia as the heir (наследница) to ancient Rome and Eastern (Byzantine ) Empire.
