The Respiratory System The Respiratory system consists of different parts 3
Respiratory System Main Functions Function 1 • To breath Oxygen in to the body Function 2 • To breath carbon dioxide out of the body 4
Short Term Effects of Exercise on the Respiratory System When you begin exercising, 2 main short term changes happen to the respiratory system Breathing Depth (Tidal Volume) INCREASES Breathing Rate INCREASES
1. Breathing Rate Increases Breathing rate is the amount of breaths you make in 1 minute When you begin exercising, your breathing rate speeds up This means that more oxygen is brought in to the body during exercise
2. Breathing Depth Increases Breathing depth is the amount of air breathed in and out of the body per breath. It is also called tidal volume When you begin exercising, you start to breath much deeper This means that more oxygen is brought in to the body during exercise
3. Oxygen Debt Oxygen debt is simply the extra oxygen which is paid back to the muscles when anaerobic (intense) exercise finishes! Exercise finishes here Oxygen debt paid back here
3. Oxygen Debt At the beginning of intense (anaerobic) exercise, the muscles do not receive enough oxygen which creates an Oxygen debt When exercise finishes, breathing rate and breathing depth stay higher for a few minutes to repay the oxygen debt! Exercise finishes here Oxygen debt paid back here
3. Repaying Oxygen Debt After anaerobic exercise, your breathing rate and breathing depth remain higher for several minutes to repay the oxygen debt and to remove carbon dioxide and lactic acid! Exercise finishes here Oxygen debt paid back here
Learning Objectives To learn about the long term effects of exercise on the respiratory system Success Criteria F-G I can list the long term effects of exercise on the respiratory system D-E I can explain the short term effects B-C I can answer multiple choice and short answer describe questions A*-A I can answer long response explaining questions
