What is the Best Way to Brush? • An effective brushing takes 2 -3 minutes • Brush at least 2 times a day – Brush teeth before school – Brush teeth before bedtime • Brush in SMALL circles! • Work from one side of the mouth to the other on both the top and bottom teeth. – Front, back, and surface of the teeth • Use a soft-bristle toothbrush

What is a cavity? • Ask children if they know what is a cavity/what causes a cavity? • Answers: – Bacteria and saliva mix together and can cause plaque which causes cavities – Sugary foods are not-so-healthy for your teeth • Ask children to give you examples of sugary foods (cake, ice cream, candy, etc)

Healthy vs. Not-so-healthy snacks • Brushing is not the only part of having healthy teeth • There are certain foods that are healthy and not-so-healthy for your teeth • *Hold up picture cards so students can tell you if it is a tooth healthy snack – Healthy snack for teeth –> thumbs up – Not-so-healthy snack for teeth –> thumbs down • End on a healthy snack so that they have an idea about what they can eat for healthy teeth

Hand out Packets • Hand out tooth fairy packets – Before handing out packets, tell children not to open/touch it unless you say it’s okay. – Go over toothbrush etiquette (only used to brush your teeth) • Explain what is in the packets and how to use them • Ask children if they know what flossing is? – Explain flossing – Tell children only to floss with the help of an adult • *Tell children to share the information in their packet with an adult at home. Have an adult in their household fill out the white ADA form and return it to their teacher

(up and down, back and forth, or small circles) – Tell me a not-so-healthy snack for your teeth. – Tell me a healthy snack for your teeth. • Answer questions they may have • Encourage them to go home and tell their family about what they learned from the tooth fairy • Give teachers the resource packets. Tell them to collect the forms from their students and then send them back to Coastal AHEC.
