Toolbox Talk Topic The Dangers of Driving at Speed
EFFECTS OF SPEED An increase in average speed of 1 km/h typically results in a 3% higher risk of a crash involving injury, with a 4– 5% increase for crashes that result in fatalities. Speed also contributes to the severity of the impact when a collision does occur
UNDERSTANDING SPEED KM/H M/S Speed is measured by covering a set distance by a set time. Speed (KM/H)= Distance (KM)/Time (H) 40 11, 11 60 16, 67 Although we look at speed in KM/H, it can be put into a better perspective to look at it in M/S (Meters per Second). By doing this we can see that at 100 KM/H we can cover a sports field of 100 m in about 3 seconds, 2 seconds if we were to travel at 180 KM/H 80 22, 22 100 27, 78 120 33, 33 150 41, 67 180 50, 00
REASONS BEHIND SPEEDING Familiarity - When a person drives the same route to and from work for years. Late - When people fail to allow enough time to safely get to their destination. Thrill seeking - These are the motorists that pass you as though you were standing still. Road rage - motorists who use their car to express their anger and frustration with other drivers. Over confidence - All age groups can fall into this category.
LOW-LEVEL SPEED Increased speed can influence your reaction times as well as braking distances. Car 1, travelling at 65 KM/H, will take 27, 1 M just to react to an issue, this is before brakes are applied, the vehicle will then take a further 43, 4 M to come to a stop. Total distance covered is 70, 5 M. Car 2, travelling at 60 KM/H, will only cover 25 M before reacting, the vehicle will only take a further 38, 9 M before it comes to a stop. Total distance covered is 63, 9 M, a 6, 6 M difference between the 2 vehicles.
HOW AVOID SPEEDING The only way to address speed is by making the effort. Follow these guidelines to help prevent speeding: • Map your route a day ahead so you know how long it may take; • Leave early, to make time available if something may arise; • Keep an eye on your speedometer occasionally; • Use cruise control where possible; and • Pay attention to speed sign posts.
