ABOUT THIS TOOL What was the tool developed for? We designed a process for participatory community resource mapping that allows you to engage stakeholders to inventory the local resources for a particular purpose or priority population. The method used for collecting this information can vary (i. e. workshop, survey of partners, key informant interviews) but the steps are always the same. This pitch deck provides an overview of the process, the value-add of this type of initiative, and the opportunities for customization. How did we use it? This tool was developed to engage leadership of our partnering organizations to ensure there is buy-in for the process and the approach at the executive level. We also used this presentation when communicating about this work with staff and providers so that everyone was on the same page. CONTACT US @ www. healthcommons. ca/contact TOOL Pitch Deck

What is community resource mapping? Community resource mapping is an engagement initiative that brings together client, patients, caregivers, and service providers to foster a shared picture of resources in the community. This participatory process allows you to co-design a map that identifies, assesses, and builds upon the community’s existing strengths and resources. 7

Five reasons to take this approach to community engagement 1 Develop an inventory of health and wellness services that fosters a shared understanding around a particular question or need. 2 Build new partnerships and see new connections between people, providers, and resources. 3 Gain a deeper understanding of how people and providers currently view, access, and navigate existing resource. 4 Gather important information to support decision-making at the system level. 5 Facilitate constructive conversations around gaps in existing resources and empower clients, patients, caregivers and providers to contribute to new solutions. 8

What will we achieve by implementing this process? Define Problem + Scope What do we want to know more about? Why do we need to know this? What will be in/out of scope for our data collection? What have we learned? What information is easy to find and where do we need to dig deeper? Refine + Synthesize Map What is the best way to convey this information? What functionality does our map need to have to be useful? This process typically takes us 1 to 6 months to implement. Given your available resources, we suggest allocating relatively this much time per phase… 9
