Tool #10: Follow-up Question Cheat Sheet Tool overview: Use this tool to familiarize yourself with the STAR framework and mentally practice a few possible follow-ups. Time required: 5 minutes Follow-up question cheat sheet (STAR) Solicit the exact background situation with as many details as possible S- Situation • When was this? • What was your role? • Who else was involved? Determine what the candidate thought about the situation to gauge his or her attitude about similar events in the future T- Thoughts • What was your first reaction to that? • What was going through your mind during the event? • How did you feel at that point? Listen for what the candidate did in reaction to the situation he or she presented A- Action • What was the very first step you took? • Can you walk me through that? • What did you say to them? Determine the result of the situation and how the candidate affected the overall situation R- Result • What was the end result? • What did your supervisor think about your actions? • What would you do the same or differently in a similar situation? Practice framing potential follow-ups to the three statements below. “My manager gave me instructions that I felt could endanger the patient. ” “The deadline was in 24 hours and the team wasn’t prepared to meet it. ” “I was asked to spearhead the development of a new clinical protocol. ” IMPLEMENTATION TIP Be a responsive listener, prompting candidates with short follow-up questions to illuminate details of their knowledge, actions, and behaviors © 2019 Advisory Board • All rights reserved 1 advisory. com
